When shopping for marble bathroom countertops choose darker colors. The darker colors are not as porous or soft as light-colored marble, and do not show stains as markedly. Oils, mayonnaise, butter, wine, and meat are usually the worst culprits for stains. Generally if the marble is used on the floor or in the kitchen, sealant can be applied.

Cultured marble is also a popular bathroom countertop idea. Cultured marble consists of a polymer containing fragments of marble. Although not nearly as expensive as real marble stains and scratches are easily sanded away, making cultured marble a practical choice.
