A bath vanity that has been stained with an oak-colored varnish in the past can be darkened in a few easy steps. Stain can be tricky because it’s easy to stain too dark. The first step is to remove the clear coat.
Use a paint or varnish stripper to remove the clear coat from the bath vanity. The amount of sanding will depend on how well the stripper removed the previous coat. The previous varnish must be removed in order for the new varnish to penetrate the wood deep enough to cover the existing stain color.
In this case where you’re staining a bath vanity that’s been previously stained it is easier to choose a darker color than a lighter one. A gel stain will be best for the new color because it will easily cover the old stain. If you’re unsure about the process, it’s best to practice on a less visible area, such as the back of a door.
